Cape Town

Overall counts of grass, weed and tree pollen were low. Tree pollen of elm (Ulmus), gum (Eucalyptus), karee (Rhus/Searsia) and pepper tree (Schinus) were detected. Weed pollen of the daisy family (Asteraceae), waxberry (Morella), goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae), English plantain (Plantago), erica (Ericaceae), aloe (Asphodelaceae), nettle (Urticaceae) and fern spores (Polypodiaceae) were present. Mould counts were also low.

Johannesburg

Overall counts of grass, weeds and tree pollen were low. Tree pollen included cypress (Cupressaceae), eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) and mulberry (Moraceae). English plantain (Plantago), euphorbia (Euphorbiaceae), goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae) and pollen from the daisy family (Asteraceae) were also present. Mould counts were low.

Pretoria

Grasses were low. Low tree levels included the types bush willow (Combretaceae), mulberry (Moraceae) and kareeboom (Searsia/Rhus). Weed levels were very low and only Pellitory-of-the-wall (Parietaria) was detected. Moulds were low.

Bloemfontein

Grass counts are increasing. Tree counts were low, with Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae), elm (Ulmaceae), acacia (Mimosaceae), waxberry (Morella) and kareeboom (Searsia/Rhus) detected. Weed counts were also low, with the daisy family (Asteraceae) nettle (Urticaceae), goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae) and iris (Iridaceae) present. Moulds were almost moderate, with peaks in ascospores and Cladosporium.

Kimberley

Grasses were high at this site. Trees were low as occasional elm (Ulmaceae), cypress (Cupressaceae) and karreboom (Searsia/Rhus) were detected. Weeds were also low and the daisy family (Asteraceae), ferns (Polypodiacea) and maize (Zea mays) were seen. Moulds were low overall but significant levels or Alternaria were detected for every sampling day of the week.

Durban

Low grass levels were detected. Low tree levels included eucalyptus (Myrtaceae), mulberry (Moraceae), jacaranda (Fabaceae), mesquite (Prosopis) and ferns (Polypodiaceae). Low weed levels included only goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae). Moulds were moderate.

Gqeberha

Grasses were low. Low tree pollen levels were detected and these included the cashew family (Anacardiaceae), waxberry (Morella) and Astralian pine (Casuarina). Weeds were low as only lily (Liliaceae) was detected. Moulds were very low.
