Cape Town

Grass, tree, weed and mould counts were low. Tree pollen included gum (Myrtaceae), mulberry (Moraceae), forest elder (Nuxia sp.) and karee (Rhus sp. / Searsia sp.). Nettle (Urticaceae) was the only weed pollen detected.

Johannesburg

Grass, trees, weeds and moulds were low. Tree pollen included karee (Rhus sp. / Searsia sp.), birch (Betula sp.), plane (Platanus sp.), elm (Ulmus sp.) and mulberry (Moraceae). The weed pollen detected included the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae), the daisy family (Asteraceae), mugwort (Artemisia), spurges (Euphorbia sp.) and ericas (Ericaeae).

Pretoria

Last week’s findings are repeated and will be updated when the new data become available. Low grass levels were detected. Tree pollen was sparse and included only karee (Searsia sp. / Rhus sp.). The only weed detected was hop-bush (Dodonaea sp.). Moulds were very low.

Bloemfontein

Grasses, trees and weeds were low throughout this sampling week. Tree pollen detected were acacia (Acacia sp.), karee (Searsia sp. / Rhus sp.) and the sumac family (Anacardiaceae). The weeds knotweed (Polygonaceae) and goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae) were detected. Moulds were low.

Kimberley

Very low tree, grass and weed pollen were detected during this cold and dry mid-winter period. Trees identified were the sumac family (Anacardiaceae) and karee (Searsia sp. / Rhus sp.). Weeds detected were goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae), nettles (Urticaceae), knotweed (Polygonaceae) and mezerium (Thymelaeaceae). Moulds were low.

Durban

Grass levels were low. Trees were low and the types detected included cypress (Cupressaceae), karee (Searsia sp. / Rhus sp.), the sumac family (Anacardiaceae) and yellowwood (Podocarpaceae). Low weed levels included nettles (Urticaceae). Moulds were low.

Gqeberha

The spore trap could not be accessed due to covid restrictions, so the findings from the previous week are repeated. Low grass levels were seen at this site. Trees were low and included pine (Pinus sp.), cedar (Pinaceae), yellowwood (Podocarpus sp.), cypress (Cupressaceae) and olive (Oleaceae). Weeds were low and the daisy family (Asteraceae), proteas (Proteaceae) sedges (Cyperaceae), ericas (Ericaceae) and slangbos (Stoebe-type) were detected. Moulds were low.
