Summary

Grass was moderate in Kimberley and moulds, notably the allergenic mould Cladosporium, were moderate in Durban and Potchefstroom.

Cape Town

Pollen and mould concentrations were extremely low. Trees detected included gum (Myrtaceae), pine (Pinaceae) and olive (Oleaceae). Weeds were knotweed (Persicaria) and the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae). Grasses were insignificant.

Johannesburg

4-year means are given. Pollen in all categories is low at this time of year. Trees present include bushwillow (Combretaceae), beech (Fagaceae), gum (Myrtaceae), elm (Ulmaceae), cypress (Cupressaceae) and linden (Tiliaceae). Weeds would be pigweed (Amaranthaceae), ferns (Polypodiaceae) and heather (Ericaceae). Moulds are low.

Pretoria

4-year means are given. Trees might include gum (Myrtaceae), beech (Fagaceae), karee (Rhus/Searsia) and willow (Salicaceae). Weeds are likely to be the daisy family (Asteraceae), the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae), sedges (Cyperaceae), ferns (Polypodiaceae) and heather (Ericaceae). Moulds are low.

Bloemfontein

Tree, grass and weed pollen concentrations were all insignificant, Trees detected included mulberry (Moraceae), gum (Myrtaceae), olive (Oleaceae), poplar (Populaceae), oak (Quercus) and karee (Rhus/Searsia). Weeds were the daisy family (Asteraceae), pigmyweeds (Crassulaceae), goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae), Fern Pellaea (Pterodaceae) sedges (Cyperaceae), lily (Liliaceae) and ferns (Polypodiaceae). Moulds were extremely low.

Kimberley

Moderate grasses were seen during this sampling week. Trees were insignificant and include mesquite (Prosopis), bushwillow (Combretaceae) and karee (Rhus/Searsia). Low weed concentrations included goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae), sorrel (Rumex) and the daisy family (Asteraceae). Moulds were extremely low.

Durban

Extremely low pollen concentrations were detected during this sampling week. Trees included gum (Myrtcaeae), elm (Ulmaceae), olive (Oleaceae), pine (Pinaceae), birch (Betulus) and bushwillow (Combretaceae). Weeds were mezereum (Thymelaeaceae). Moulds were moderate with peaks for the allergenic mould Cladosporium and increases in ascospores following rain.

Gqeberha

No findings are available and so 4-year means are shown, Trees previously detected at this time of year were gum (Myrtaceae), cedar (Cedrus), waxberry (Morella), mulberry (Moraceae) and beech (Fagaceae). Weeds might be heather (Ericaceae), sedges (Cyperaceae) and the daisy family (Asteraceae). Moulds are low.

Potchefstroom

Pollen concentrations were low. Trees identified included oriental hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis) and karee (Rhus/Searsia). Weeds were ragweed (Ambrosia) and mugwort (Artemisia). Moulds were moderate with peaks for the allergenic mould Cladosporium.

George

Low concentrations of trees, grasses and weeds were detected during this cold and rainy sampling week. Trees included karee (Rhus/Searsia) and yellowwood (Podocarpaceae). Weeds were ragweed (Ambrosia), mugwort (Artemisia), goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae), protea (Proteaceae), erica (Ericaceae) and mezereum (Thymelaeaceae). Moulds were low, with small spikes for basidiospores (includes mushrooms).
