Summary

Mould concentrations are low at all sites except Durban where they were moderate to high . Tree pollen is disappearing from the air, but grasses are increasing at sites with summer rainfall.

Cape Town

Trees detected included the sumac family (Anacardiaceae), the monkey puzzle tree (Auracariaceae), gum (Myrtaceae), karee (Rhus/Searsia), olive (Oleaceae), pine (Pinaceae), willow (Salix), beech (Fagus), walnut (Juglandaceae) and yellowwood (Podocarpaceae). Weeds were erica (Ericaceae), goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae), English Plantain (Plantaginaceae), sedges (Cyperaceae) and sorrel (Rumex). Moulds were low.

Calvinia

This site is not running.

Johannesburg

Averages are given for the past four years as this site is paused. Trees usually detected at this time are bushwillow (Combretaceae), poplar (Populaceae), elm (Ulmaceae), cypress (Cupressaceae), mulberry (Moraceae), gum (Myrtcaeae), pine (Pinaceae), plane (Platanaceae), Weeds are Goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae), English plantain (Plantaginaceae), the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae), Pellitory-of-the-wall (Parietaria) and the daisy family (Asteraceae). Moulds are low.

Pretoria

Four-year averages are shown as this spore trap is running but not processed. Trees are gum (Myrtaceae), ash (Fraxinus), birch (Betulus), hackberry (Celtis) and oak (Quercus). Weeds are English plantain (Plantaginaceae), mezereum (Thymelaeaceae) and Pellitory-of-the-wall (Parietaria). Moulds are low.

Bloemfontein

Trees detected were acacia (Acacia), birch (Betulus), false olive (Buddleja), waxberry (Morella), gum (Myrtaceae), pine (Pinaceae), poplar (Populaceae), and karee (Rhus/Searsia). Weeds were the daisy family (Asteraceae), pigmyweeds (Crassulaceae), sedges (Cyperaceae), sorrel (Rumex), caltrops (Zygophyllaceae) and plantain (Plantaginaceae). Moulds were low.

Kimberley

Strong winds reduced pollen and mould in the air. Trees included olive (Oleaceae), the sumac family (Anacardiaceae), karee (Rhus/Searsia), pecan (Carya), mulberry (Moracaeae), elm (Ulmaceae) and bushwillow (Combretaceae). Weeds were the daisy family (Asteraceae), the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae), goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae), sorrel (Rumex) and protea (Proteaceae). Moulds were low.

Durban

Tree pollen included pecan (Carya), birch (Betula), mulberry (Moraceae), olive (Oleaceae), beech (Fagus) and elm (Ulmaceae). Weeds were the daisy family (Asteraceae), goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae), nettles (Urticaceae), sedges (Cyperaceae), English Plantain (Plantaginaceae) and ferns (Polypodiaceae)

Gqeberha

The findings for this week were delayed. Previous counts are shown here. Grasses, trees and weeds were low. Only karee (Rhus/Searsia sp) tree pollen was detected in low numbers. Weeds were sedges (Cyperaceae) and rockfoils (Saxifrage). Moulds were low.

Potchefstroom

No grasses were detected during this sampling period. Trees and weeds were low, but occasional high counts were noted for individual trees like olive. Other trees included birch (Betulaceae), cypress (Cupressaceae) copperleaf (Acalypha) and sand olive (Dionaea). Weeds were the carrot family (Pinaceae), pigmyweeds (Crassulaceae) and buttercups (Ranunculaceae). Moulds were low,
