Summary
Pollen concentrations are low at all the sites. Tree pollen is more varied at some sites especially coastal sites as we approach spring.
Cape Town
Pollen increased at this sampling site. Trees included sumac (Ancardiaceae), Australian pine (Casuarina), cypress (Cupressaceae) and yellowwood (Podocarpaceae). Weeds were hemp (Cannabaceae), spurges (Euphorbiaceae), nettles (Urticaceae), bulrush (Typhaceae) and erica (Ericaceae). Moulds were low.
Johannesburg
Pollen was low at this site. Tres were hackberry (Celtis) and gum (Myrtaceae) and no weeds were detected. Moulds were low.
Pretoria
Pollen in all three categories is usually low at this time of the year. Trees might be bushwillow (Combretaceae), oak (Quercus), plane (Platanaceae), pine (Pinaceae). Gum (Myrtaceae), karee (Searsia) and elm (Ulmaceae). Weeds could be the daisy family (Asteraceae), the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae), spurges (Euphorbiaceae), hopbush (Dodonaea) and sedges (Cyperaceae). Moulds would be low. 6-year means are shown.
Bloemfontein
Low pollen concentrations were detected at this sampling site. Trees were false olive (Buddleia), bushwillow (Combretaceae), poplar (Populaceae), karee (Searsia) and oak (Quercus). Weeds were sedges (Cyperaceae) and moulds were low.
Kimberley
Pollen concentrations were consistently low at this sampling site. Trees were birch (Betula), false olive (Buddleia), hackberry (Celtis), bushwillow (Combretaceae), oak (Quercus), plane (Platanaceae), waxberry (Morella), gum (Myrtaceae), poplar (Populaceae) and karee (Searsia). Weeds were mugwort (Artemisia), the daisy family (Asteraceae) and sedges (Cyperaceae) and moulds were low.
Durban
Pollen was low in at this sampling site. Trees were the monkey puzzle tree (Araucariaceae), palm (Arecaceae), birch (Betula), bushwillow (Combretaceae), cypress (Cupressaceae) and olive (Oleaceae). Weeds were pigmyweeds (Crassulaceae), lily (Liliaceae), plantain (Plantaginaceae), sedges (Cyperaceae), bulrush (Typhaceae). Fern spores (Polypodiaceae) were present and moulds were low.
Gqeberha
Pollen was extremely low at this sampling site. Trees were cypress (Cupressaceae) and karee (Searsia) and weeds were aloe (Asphelodaceae) and coffeebush (Bruniaceae). Moulds were low.
George
At this time of the year pollen is scarce. Trees might be forest elder (Nuxia), oak (Quercus), gum (Myrtaceae) and Australian pine (Casuarina). Weeds could be spurges (Euphorbiaceae), erica (Ericaceae), the daisy family (Asteraceae), mugwort (Artemisia) and sedges (Cyperaceae). Moulds would be low. 2-year means are shown.
