Summary

Tree, grass and weed pollen concentrations were low at all the sampling sites.

Cape Town

Grasses were low. Low tree counts included Australian pine (Casuarina), cypress (Cupressaceae), yellowwood (Podocarpaceae) and poplar (Populaceae). Low weeds included mugwort (Artemisia), sedges (Cyperaceae), hemp (Cannabaceae), goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae), erica (Ericaceae), protea (Proteaceae), bulrush (Typhaceae) and nettles (Urticaceae). Moulds were low.

Johannesburg

Pollen concentrations were very low. Trees included karee (Searsia) and no weeds were seen. Moulds were low.

Pretoria

6-year means are shown. Trees would be gum (Myrtaceae), cypress (Cupressaceae), mulberry (Moraceae), pine (Pinaceae), beech (Fagaceae), bushwillow (Combretaceae), linden (Tiliaceae) and poplar (Populaceae). Weeds might be the daisy family (Asteraceae), plantain (Plantaginaceae), slangbos (Stoebe-type), the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae), sedges (Cyperaceae), spurges (Euphorbiaceae) and mezereum (Thymelaeaceae). Ferns could be present and moulds would be low.

Bloemfontein

Pollen concentrations in all three categories were low. Trees were acacia (Acacia-type), birch (Betula), bushwillow (Combretaceae), hackberry (Celtis), plane (Platanaceae), pine (Pinaceae), karee (Searsia) and oak (Quercus). Weeds were sedges (Cyperaceae) and plantain (Plantaginaceae). Fern spores were seen and moulds were low.

Kimberley 

All pollen concentrations were low at this sampling site. Trees were birch (Betula), false olive (Buddleja), bushwillow (Combretaceae), poplar (Populaceae) and karee (Searsia). Weeds were pigmyweeds (Crassulaceae) and sedges (Cyperaceae) and ferns (Polypodiaceae) were seen. Moulds were low.

Durban

6-year means are shown. Trees would be karee (Searsia), waxberry (Morella), protea (Proteaceae), nettles (Urticaceae), the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae) and knotweed (Periscaria). Moulds would be low.

Gqeberha

Pollen counts were low. Trees were cypress (Cupressaceae) and weeds were mugwort (Artemisia). Moulds were low.

George

2-year means are given. Pollen in all three categories would be low. Trees could be yellowwood (Podocarpaceae), pine (Pinaceae) and waxberry (Morella). Weeds might be the daisy family (Asteraceae), reeds (Restionaceae), mugwort (Artemisia), mezereum (Thmelaeaceae) and protea (Proteaceae). Moulds would be low.
